An external force is any influence that can change the state of motion of an object. Examples include:

  • Gravity: The force that pulls objects toward the Earth.
  • Friction: The force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact.
  • Applied Force: A force that is applied to an object by a person or another object.
  • Air Resistance: The force that air exerts on a moving object, opposing its motion.

Equilibrium

When all the forces acting on an object are balanced (the net force is zero), the object is said to be in equilibrium. This means:

  • A stationary object remains stationary.
  • A moving object continues to move at a constant velocity.

Real-World Examples

  1. Car at a Traffic Light: A car at rest will not move until the driver applies a force by pressing the accelerator pedal.
  2. Spaceship in Space: In the vacuum of space, a spaceship will keep moving in a straight line at constant speed because there is no air resistance or friction to slow it down.
  3. Soccer Ball on Grass: A soccer ball will eventually come to a stop after being kicked due to the force of friction between the ball and the grass.

Newton’s First Law is crucial because it introduces the concept of inertia and lays the groundwork for understanding forces and motion. It challenges the ancient Greek notion (especially Aristotle’s) that a force is necessary to maintain motion, a misconception corrected by Newton’s insights.
